In Motion: Iceland – The Land of Fire and Ice

Lost in Iceland, South Coast Drive
To put it simply, Iceland, the land of fire and ice, is truly amazing. From the abundant adventure activities and beautifully bizarre landscapes, to the quaint towns and welcoming people, there is so much to fall in love with in this tiny island country, and fall for it we did. Iceland is by far our favorite country to date, and it’s going to be hard to top. We spent a short 6 days exploring, but we managed to pack in numerous adventures and meet up with an awesome Icelander,
Inga from Tiny Iceland. Here is a rundown of our activities:

To put some of the awesomeness of these activities into perspective, here is a video we made–we felt as though we were living a dream every day we were there:

I keep going back and forth on going to Iceland or not. It looks beautiful, but the price of the trip and being there scares me away. But, then I see places like the Blue Lagoon and I want to go. Sigh.

It is definitely very beautiful and the Blue Lagoon was so great! We were actually surprised, it was a lot more affordable than we thought it would be. That’s not to say it wasn’t expensive, the tours and eating out can cost quite a bit, but we used hotel points and frequent flier miles to offset most of our costs. And, picking up sandwiches from the grocery store at eating at the N1 stations helped our food cost as well. They weren’t the most delicious meals of the trip, but surprisingly not bad at all and worth the savings so we could explore more 🙂 It really is a great place if you get the chance to go though!

Thanks for sharing your adventures in Iceland!

We just got back from our 10 days going around Iceland last week, and just like for you, it lies on top of all experiences we’ve had so far (and that’s 20 years of travels!)! We toured around the entire island, and it was truly the most amazing place…

For anyone who’s hesitating- Go for it! We waited for couple of years because of the expensive tickets (and always found cheaper destinations such as Greece, Croatia etc.) and thought it might be too pricey, but honestly to our surprise it also wasn’t that bad! We booked basically all the accommodation (and car) well in advance, which saved us a lot of money. The rest wasn’t too bad either, and you can always eat one of those delicious Icelandic hotdogs if you’re running low on cash 😉

What’s there not to love in Iceland…

Totally agree! It’s definitely something to just go for–we saved quite a bit by booking in advance as well. And like you, I kept finding cheaper places to go as well, but it wasn’t that expensive in the end!

Glad you guys enjoyed it so much too–20 years of travel, that’s great, I’m sure you have been to some amazing places! 🙂 We wanted to tour around the entire island, but didn’t have enough time. Something we want to do next trip for sure–it sounds like so much fun!

And you’re right, how can you go wrong with the cheap hot dogs and food from n1 when you run low on cash!? 🙂

Got to your website through Darius’s site at MMS, and LOVE the video. Great design and music choice.

Would love to find out your points and earning strategy to make such a magical trip happen, would love to do the same as well!

Thanks so much for dropping by! It was great to cut back on flight and hotel costs there as it can get spendy–hope you can do the same! We earned most of the miles for our flight through the Chase United card, and the rest was through the wine club and daily spending. And, for the hotels, we both participated in the BOGO Club Carlson promo that happened the previous summer–I think we earned close to 175,000 Club Carlson points with that one, so it took care of the hotels and then some!

Sweet! That’s amazing that you guys were able to use points for so much of the trip. I have been looking at doing a US west coast to DUS (stopover) to KEF flight plan using United’s website, but unfortunately it seems very spotty and hard to use.

Hopefully when I take the trip in summer 2015, I’ll also be able to take some awesome shots/videos!

Thanks–I’m so glad we were able use points! I had some trouble finding flights too; it took quite a bit of searching, but eventually I found something that worked. The only way I could get ours to work was with a stopover in Oslo. Hope you are able to find a flight that works for you! Have a great trip next summer–I’m sure you will get lots of great shots!
