A Photo Essay: Stockholm, Sweden

This past summer we made our way to Stockholm, Sweden, for the travel blogging conference TBEX. Our visit to Stockholm was supposed to start off a month of travel around Europe with Eurail passes, but at the last minute, Micah was booked on a photography job in Oregon. This led to several rapid-fire changes in our schedule, and we ended up postponing the rest of our trip until December when we could explore the European Christmas markets.

All of this came after 3 very busy months of non-stop running and very little sleep, which meant that we were exhausted by the time we made it to Stockholm. We felt like sleeping our free time away, but thankfully, we had a ton of friends in town for the conference and we couldn’t wait to see them all. In total, we had about 6 days in the city, but only 2 that weren’t filled with conference activities.

Typically, we only visit one or two museums on a trip, but this time around we hit up four; we explored the Abba Museum, Vasa Museum, Fotografiska Museum, and Noble Museum. We also created our own little subway tour to check out some of the amazing art in the Stockholm subway stations! Some of the stations were so creative and beautiful—I loved them so much that we will be writing up a post dedicated entirely to the subway art, as well.

In addition to museums and art, we also went on a Context Tour through the Södermalm neighborhood of Stockholm. We learned all about how the neighborhood has changed from a working-class district to one of the trendy areas in town. It was a very thorough and insightful tour and we came away with a deeper understanding of how the city has changed over the years.

The rest of our visit was spent wandering through the old town, strolling along the waterfront, sipping on coffee in adorable cafes, taking the hop on hop off boat around the city, and relaxing in many beautiful green parks. Even though we didn’t end up experiencing all the adventures we had hoped to, it was a relaxing few days filled with some desperately needed downtime. Because sometimes, that’s just all you need to find the beauty of a new city.

With that, here are some of our favorite photos from our trip:
