Skiing and Snowboarding at Sundance Mountain Resort

Skiing in the mountains was a completely new experience for us. I’ve mentioned before how, after a 16 year hiatus, we finally got back out on the slopes again this year. And, until our first trip to Utah, we had only skied down the tiny hills in Minnesota.

We were on a time crunch, so after a morning of snowmobiling, we raced over to Sundance Mountain Resort to squeeze in a few hours of skiing, snowboarding and more filming. Micah, James and Bobby all went with snowboards, while I stuck with skis–I wasn’t about to try snowboarding again without taking lessons, especially on a mountain!  Sundance Mountain Resort is home to 42 runs, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing, as well as a spa and a full range of summer activities.

As we approached the chairlift, the mountain behind it appeared to get larger with every step. It was a tad bit intimidating, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. After what seemed like an eternity compared to the two-minute chairlifts that we are used to back home, we finally made it to the top of our first run.

We always laugh about the rating systems of the various hills–the “blacks diamonds” that we are used to back home are practically “green circles” in the mountains. It’s comical that there isn’t a more universal rating system used.

We started out slowly down a green run and as I stopped and turned around to see if Micah was behind me, I watched him plow over an innocent bystander. The funniest thing about it was that he was moving so slow, but couldn’t stop himself or get the lady’s attention, so he ended up knocking her right over and falling in the process. I shouldn’t laugh, but it was pretty hilarious–my apologies to the lady that got run over at Sundance in early January!

After that little stunt, we were on our way down the hill when I realized I couldn’t stop or slow down. The snow was so different from anything I had ever skied on before, and I was a complete mess. I was wobbling all over the place and eventually fell into a position that I could absolutely not get up from. Maybe it was karma for laughing at the innocent bystander, but whatever the case, it took me a good few minutes to get myself up from that fall.

I ended up twisting my knee, and that paired with my sudden inability to stop, really freaked me out. Normally, I’m used to skiing on slightly icy conditions back home, but this snow was practically a wet slush, and it just wasn’t working for me. I don’t remember the last time I had fallen on skis, but for some reason I couldn’t stay standing this time around! It was pretty frustrating to say the least. That along with the fact that the runs were over three times the length of what I’m used to, really got me out of my groove.

Unfortunately, I only ended up going down a few runs, but the guys made up for my lack of skills–they all went down quite a few different slopes throughout the afternoon. Other than that initial debacle, Micah handled the terrain much better than I did.

While I’m bummed that I didn’t take more advantage of the skiing, I still had a ton of fun trying out my [lack of] skills on the mountain. We’ve since been able to go skiing again a few times back home, and I’m happy to say that I’m out of my funk. Now, I’m ready to get out on the slopes again soon!
