Adventure in Las Vegas: Indoor Skydiving

Skydiving has long been on my wish list, but there seems to be nothing that I can do to convince Micah to go with me. Apparently, he has no desire to jump out of a plane. I came across Vegas Indoor Skydiving when I was researching adventure in Las Vegas, and it sounded like so much fun. So, I thought I would give it one more shot and see if indoor skydiving would make him change his mind about the real thing. It didn’t. But, that’s not to say we still didn’t have a blast flying indoors—it was so much fun!

You may be wondering how indoor skydiving is possible. Basically, you head into a vertical wind tunnel that simulates the skydiving experience—inside the tunnel, the walls are padded and the floor is a trampoline. The tunnel blows enough wind that it can support an adult and let you fly through the air. Skydivers can use the tunnel to practice their technique or it can be used by people like us who want to fly for the first time.

After arriving at the facility and checking in for our morning session, we made our way upstairs for an instructional video and some tips on how best to position your body for flying. Before we knew it, we were getting geared up and ready to go with helmets, goggles, gloves and some pretty stylish suits.

We hopped into the wind tunnel and our first item on the to-do list was to practice the tuck and roll technique. This consisted of jumping on the trampoline and bouncing to the side platform in a tuck and roll fashion—an important technique for exiting the wind stream safely—you don’t want to land wrong and hurt yourself!

Soon enough, it was time to start flying, and we couldn’t have been more excited. There were 6 people in our group; we each ended up with three turns and the entire experience takes around an hour. When it is your turn, you jump into the wind and began to fly!

The instructors make sure you are in the correct position and help you stay in the wind stream if you start to veer off track. At one point, he even jumped up and flew in the air with me. Flying through the air was such a cool experience, especially when they spin you around in circles. Oh, and word to the wise–be careful if you are wearing a collared shirt–Micah got beat up by his collar when it popped out of his suit and started whipping him in the wind!

Although you can’t bring a camera with you in the wind tunnel, they do offer video and photos for purchase. We couldn’t resist watching ourselves fly, so we had to buy a couple of photos and the video. Here is a peek at the video from our flight—Micah is first and I am next and then we alternate throughout the video:

Indoor skydiving was such a fun experience, and we would love to go again. Even though it didn’t convince Micah to change his mind about skydiving, it did make me even more excited to eventually go skydiving one day soon!

Have you ever been skydiving, either inside or out?
