An iPhone Photo Essay: 2012 Year in Review

Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone’s year has been off to a great start–Micah and I have many exciting adventures planned for 2013, and I am excited to share more about them soon. In the meantime, I thought I should recap 2012 and share a different type of photo essay than we normally post. The majority of the images you usually see are shot by Micah with his DSLR camera, but we both carry our iPhones around quite often, and we take thousands of photos with our phones as well. We both love to play around with filters, textures and effects; some of our favorite photo editing apps are ProHDR, Instagram, Afterglow and Hipstamatic. It was hard to narrow it down, but here are 20 of our favorite iPhone photos for 2012:

Ghent, Belgium

Ghent, Belgium: I love the beautiful, historic buildings that line the streets throughout Belgium. This particular street was located near the Friday Market, or Vrijdagmarkt.

..

Ghent, Belgium

Ghent, Belgium: The many canals running throughout Ghent definitely add character to this amazing city and are perfect for a stroll, day or night, due to the ingenious lighting that shines on many buildings after dark.

..

Belfry Tower, Bruges, Belgium

Bruges, Belgium: The Belfry Tower is quite the climb–with 366 stairs climbing almost straight up a tiny spiral staircase 83 meters (about 272 feet) high, you almost feel as though you are climbing up a ladder at times. It is a dizzying workout, but you are well rewarded with the view from the top.

..

Belfry Tower View, Bruges, Belgium

Bruges, Belgium: Speaking of views from the top of the Belfry, this image offers a glimpse out the tower’s window right before sunset.

..

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges, Belgium: I fell in love with this Cinema, even if I didn’t get to go inside. Doesn’t it just look like a great place to go for some evening entertainment?

..

Paris, France

Paris, France: We always enjoy tinkering with filters and effects on our phone images–Micah created this image of the Eiffel Tower that makes me feel as though I was transported into the early 1900’s.

..

Luxembourg Gardens, Paris, France

Paris, France: Even on a gloomy day, Jardin du Luxembourg in the 6th arr. is a great place for a brisk walk.

..

Toronto, Canada

Toronto, Canada: The view of Toronto from the Toronto Island Ferry is unbeatable. If you make a visit out to the islands, make sure you plan enough time, so you aren’t running to catch your ferry like we were!

..

Niagara Falls, Canada

Niagara Falls, Canada: The Maid of the Mist tour gives you a great vantage point of the falls. This image was taken when we were heading towards the powerful natural wonder!

..

Niagara on the Lakes, Canada

Niagara on the Lake, Canada: The scenic drive from Niagara Falls to Toronto is beautiful. Quaint wineries dot the sides of the roads, and although we didn’t have time to stop for a full visit, we did get a chance to stop for photos.

..

Jefferson Memorial, Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C., USA: We happened to be in the right place at the right time to catch the Jefferson Memorial with this beautiful sunset as a backdrop.

.

Arlington Cemetery, Washington D.C.

Washington D.C., USA: I love the way the light is shining through the entryway to the Arlington National Cemetery Memorial Amphitheater. The amphitheater is located right next to the Tomb of the Unknowns where the changing of the guards takes place.

.

Pelican Rapids, Minnesota

Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, USA: I captured this sunset while out in a boat on Lake Lida; this small town, in nowhere Minnesota, will always be “home” to Micah and me. We love going home to enjoy the serenity of the multitude of lakes in the area. Minnesota isn’t called “Land of 10,000 Lakes” for nothing, and let me tell you, they are beautiful.

.

Pelican Rapids, Minnesota

Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, USA: Another image from our small little hometown; this suspension bridge crosses the Pelican River that runs right through the middle of town. We used to jump off this bridge when we were younger, and this past summer, where we went kayaking for a relaxing afternoon.

Key West, Florida

Key West, Florida, USA: Key West can be quite the party town, but if you sneak away to the right spot, you can find calm serenity like you see above. Relaxing in the hammocks at the Casa Marina Resort is sure to put you on island time in a hurry.

..

Key West, Florida

Key West, Florida, USA: Every evening, Mallory Square in Key West hosts a sunset celebration. Everyone gathers to watch street performers, shop at the stands, and of course, stare at gorgeous sunsets.

..

West Palm Beach, Florida

West Palm Beach, Florida, USA: Along Clematis Street in West Palm Beach, you will find graffiti type art on the side of many buildings. This particular painting is located along S Rosemary Ave just south of Clematis Street. We enjoy wandering around the area and admiring the art–there is always something interesting to look at.

..

Lion Country Safari, Loxahatchee, Florida

Loxahatchee, Florida, USA: A rhino in Florida you say? Why, yes! If you head to the Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, you can go on your own drive through safari. But, be careful! There is nothing between your car and the animals–we had to wait for this rhino to cross the road before we could continue on our way–I was just glad he didn’t charge at us! It’s a great way to get up close and personal with some exotic animals.

..

Showcase of Clermont, Orlando, Florida

Clermont, Florida, USA: Not far from Orlando, the Showcase of Citrus is high on my list of activities to do when you are in the area. I love the smell of the fresh oranges, and you can’t beat the taste of an orange picked fresh from the tree only minutes before.

..

Deerfield Beach, Florida

Deerfield Beach, Florida, USA: This pier located in Deerfield Beach juts out into the water right along a nice beach with numerous shops and restaurants nearby. For a small fee, you can walk out onto the pier where you can fish or just sight see and go for a walk. There are great views from below as well, if you so choose...
